After installing XQuartz, thanks to the text at Problem #1 at http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/build-dev/2014-October.txt using these options worked --with-freetype-include=/usr/X11/include/freetype2 --with-freetype-lib=/usr/X11/lib
