Thank you both so much. We had cloned http://hg.openjdk.java.net/jdk8u/jdk8u/. I eventually arrived at the tr -d solution as well, but was unsure about whether I was fixing the problem or masking a deeper one. I'm on the air now. I would be happy to cooperate on a permanent fix but I'm unsure what that would be (and haven't done OpenJDK development before). Thanks again.
