I blew away the slave's builder directory complete, the master's log
directory for this, and the master's state.sqlite, then upgraded the slave
to the latest release. Everything appears to be fine now.
So I guess this issue is more complicated; there was some sort of state
that was messed up. Sorry for changing so much in one go && thus
confusing what the real issue is...
