#1994: means to add periodic metrics checks without modifying metrics.py

It would be great to be able to register a particular metric for
monitoring during the periodicCheck in metrics.py.
In particular, I'd like to hook {{{master.caches.get_metrics()}}} up for
periodic monitoring.
