I don't disagree...the hadoop->java7 migration was a mess because we all 
thought that the dropdown jdk settings were sorting things out. They weren't, 
so the java8 builds were still on java6, as were the trunk builds when I 
thought I'd switched them last week.

Ideally hadoop builds should go back to a shared SCM-managed env var file 
setting things up, relying on those env vars JAVA8_HOME &c coming down, and 
setting the build up that way. That would radically improve maintenance on 10+ 
builds
