As you may be aware, most anesthesiologists, or at least all of those in our
market, use the ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) Relative Value
Guide and ASA Crosswalk reference guides as their source for coding the
services they provide to our members and their other patients. There are
codes in these books that are not in CPT. Moreover, these codes are
commonly used by anesthesiologists throughout the country.
A list of these codes is as follows:
00541, 00640, 00798, 01175, 01905, 01916, 01931, 01932, 01933,01941, 01942,
01943, 01944, 01961, 01962, 01980, 01997, 01998, 01996, 01997, and 01998
Questions:
1) Can anesthesiologists continue to use these codes when billing
us or will HIPPA put a halt to their use; and
2) since these codes describe very specific anesthesia services,
what will CPT/the AMA be doing to address the coding of these service.
