Change in behavior: get_console_fd() does not exit on failure. When you have a change in behavior, you need to explain in your [PATCH] email why do you think it's not a problem. In this case, it makes sense to make get_console_fd() to die on failure - all callers do not expect it to fail. Applied with modifications.
