Not saying it has anything to do with anything, but we were having ash crash often in the parent side of a fork/exec, which showed up in exactly those kinds of scenarios. Turned out to be a linux kernel problem with copy-on-write pages on the particular MIPS we were using: the Broadcom Raven switch chip. But that's why a complete environment brain-dump is helpful.
