unfortunately it would appear that you are the one who is wrong here.  i dont 
know where you're getting your information, but you need to check it again.  
Debian has never packaged awk with util-linux in etch, lenny, nor sid.  plus 
it wouldnt make any sense at all considering the upstream util-linux package 
has never included any version of awk let alone the GNU awk package (which is 
what Denys asked about).

i wasnt talking about the example output.  *i* was referring to your --version 
output which shows quite clearly you're running GNU awk and nothing remotely 
related to util-linux.
