Never read K&R.  I learned C the year after the first ANSI standard came out, 
on a compiler that supported that.

But it's good to know.  (I'm aware of what all the versions I used _did_, just 
not sure what the standard actually required.  I've never personally 
encountered a system with a "char" that wasn't 8 bits either, but I'm told 
they were out there...)
