I remember once upon a time having instructions for building busybox sed so you could configure busybox with it. I vaguely pondered having a "make prerequisites" that would build busybox from a canned .config file, install it into a subdirectory, and then re-run the build with the $PATH adjusted to have that subdirectory at the start of the build.
