mount by UUID

I've compiled busybox with UUID support for mount.  But when I try to 
mount by UUID it fails:

root@anchor:/bin# mount UUID="DE1C-431F" /data
mount: mounting UUID=DE1C-431F on /data failed: No such file or directory
Is this supported or do I need to have an fstab?
