Anybody here ever actually used dd to read from an actual _tape_ drive? Short reads are the norm, there. (Or were.) The bs= size was the _maximum_ record size, but the records could be, and often were, shorter. Please don't break dd so that it can only work on 'b'lock devices, and not 'c'har devices.
