dear isaac and others,

what's in a name? everything! it helps to use specific, correct
english names and scientific names, when the latter are known to
those who are helping out others with identifications. "Tufted Royal"
does not refer to a species, Evans gave that name to genus Pratapa
because male Pratapa have very prominent tufts of special scales on
the upper side of the wings. amol's butterfly would be accurately
called White Tufted Royal (Pratapa deva). i had communicated that to
amol before.

by the way, isaac, note that the picture of the White Tufted Royal in
your book seems to be a misidentification. in that species the discal
bar in space 7 on underside hind-wing is shifted out, as you
correctly mentioned in the text. the illustrated specimen does not
have the bar in 7 shifted out. i am unable to say what that specimen
is because the other main key characters for that species-group are
not visible in the picture.

on a general note, i have started seeing a lot of misidentifications
on the group once again. it was not so bad some time back. i had
written a mail about it last year or year before that. it would be
extremely good if people are more careful with their identifications,
and cautious when helping out beginners with their unidentified
pictures. please confirm your identifications from reliable books
before writing on the group. that will keep the group just as lively,
but more helpful and reliable.
