I was  excited by the interest of the members in the life history of the Palm
King, Amathusia phidippus. More exciting were the excellent pictures posted by
Susanth, and, I think, this mail would add to the current discussions in the
group.

I was lucky enough to be part of this study on the natural history of the Palm
King under the guidance of Dr George Mathew of the Kerala Forest Reseach
Institute. Sandex, a young naturalist, collected the eggs from Thenmala where
there is a naturally sustaining population of the Palm Kings, though rare. The
study involved the documentation of the life stages, study of the morphology
and behaviour of the immature stages and the adult. We documented all the
stages, from egg, all instars of the larvae, morphological changes and
camouflage of the larvae and pupae, and the whole process of eclosion of the
pupa to the adult. Currently we are watching the adults to study its behaviour.
I am happy to attach some of the pictures here to share with the group members.
