BUTTERFLY WATCH IN SIKKIM
October 2008
SPECIAL CAMP FOR BUTTERFLY WATCHING with the Author of the Book of Indian
Butterflies
Sikkim is truly a hot spot for butterflies with 700 species ranging from the
Golden Birdwings to Green Sapphires. Participants will be taught identification
and photography of butterflies under expert guidance.
All uphill climbs will be in vehicles. There is no strenuous trekking while
walking down-hill on the roads. Senior members are welcome to participate.
Camp will be situated in Namprikdang in Dzongu, North District, Sikkim. Dzongu
is the last stronghold of the Lepcha tribe of Sikkim. Namprikdang, is the main
gateway to this Lepcha reserve and falls under the Khangchendzonga Biosphere
Reserve. It lies on the confluence of River Kanaka and River Tista, where the
BNHS Base camp will be situated. Here the sub tropical zone supports a variety
