That's because it's a moth caterpillar, Limacodidae, or slug moth
caterpillar or stinging nettle caterpillar. Touch not those 'spikes' I
understand they are very painful!

They are quite common in Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai.

Subject: [ButterflyIndia] ID FOR CATERPILLAR

Dear All,

I photographed this caterpillar in Bhopal on a Palm Leaf. i checked it with
all the books I have but could not reach to any conclusion. I tried to look
for them on Web but not much info about this. I think I missed it
somewhere??

May I request the members to help in ID this caterpillar.

Thanks and Regards.

Happy Christmas to all.
