to find out exact role of any animal or plant sps can happen only after a
through research of that sps. till then it  is difficult to tell exact role.
for example when last Dodo bird died people came to know that a perticular
plant sps is not germinating at all i. e. no new saplings( sorry forgotten the
name of the plant). this was because when dodo use to eat the fruit of that
plant the seed use to go through enzymatic action of digestive juices of dodo.
when no dodo no eating of fruits hence no seed processing and no germination.
till dodo was alive this action was not known.
the migration of butterflies , wing pattern, butterfly vision, scales on the
wings, flying ability and many other are the topic of research now. we may ge
many discoveries through it.we may get some medicines also from these
butterflies, who knows?
but till then why butterflies only respect, and love every living creature
because it may be useful link in our foodweb.
let us not regret the loss after loosing it.

Dear Narayani
Hi!
75% agriculturally important crops are pollinated by butterflies which
is second after honey bees. Think of US which is devoid of butterflies
and now importing them for pollination. That is why we care for them
apart from their beauty and their role in the study of insects as a
model. The pattern of colours they carry on their wings inspire many
textile designers for creation of new colour patterns. They inspire
poet to write poetry and writers to write fairy tales.
I guess this is more then enough for a butterfly lover to know at the
entry point of butterfly india who has brought all of us close to each
other.
Bye and regards
SP
