Hi All,
Had a fabulous trip to Namdapha NP in Arunachal Pradesh. Its the easternmost
national park of the country. Its a tropical rain forest spread over 1985 sq
km. The terrain is very difficult. The trees are really huge and the canopy
level is at almost 200+ ft above us. Trees like Hollong Dipterocarpus
macrocarpus, Hollock Terminalia myriocarpa and huge tree ferns. We counted
minimum 300 species of butterflies. This is the first list of Namdapha touching
300 mark. It included rare Freak, White punch, Four bar swordtail, Yellow flat,
Scarce white commodore, White commodore etc. to name a few.
Apart from butterflies we saw rare animals like Slow loris, Stump tailed
macaque, Assamese macaque, Capped langur. All these primates are not easy to
locate due to the thicket. Also we saw a goat called Serow. Its a high altitude
mammal but it was very unusual to see it lower altitude. It was 10 AM and it
was crossing river just infront of us.
One of us managed to get good video of it.
I was not looking specially for the birds but still I managed to spot some
beauties like White crowned laughing thrush, Silver eared mesia, some Piculet,
Pin tailed green pigeon, some unknown eagles atop tree canopy, green backed
sunbird, streaked spiderhunter (very common), Sultan tit just few feet from me.
There are five species of hornbills are found in Namdapha but this time only
one member managed to spot Oriental Pied Hornbill.
Oh, I forgot. There was a white bellied heron which was fishing near the guest
house. Also I saw Ibisbill and some merganser in flight. Sometimes there were
huge great cormorant flocks on water bed.
Comments are welcome for the photos.
