Thanks.

What I am looking for are some criteria for deciding from the underside alone.
I am not sure they exist...

regards
Amber

Hi,

The attached picture is of the underside of a possible Rounded/Striped Pierrot
(Tarucaus nara) from North Delhi. This is one of 4 very similar butterflies
reported from this area, and as far as I have been able to read, these cannot
be safely distinguished from the underside alone. One source is Torben Larsen's
annotated checklist of Delhi butterflies.

Here is a summary of the possibilities according to [Larsen]:

Striped Pierrot (T nara) - (Includes extricatus and alteratus. T extricatus
seems to be usually called "Rounded Pierrot") - most common

Balkan Pierrot - (T balkanicus) - rare

Indian Pierrot - (T indica) - larger than T nara, uncommon, but consistently
present in some localities.( Larsen lists some localities in South Delhi)

Spotted Pierrot - (T callinara) - more "macular" (ie, blotchy) markings than in
other 3, which tend to form continuous bands. Uncommon/rare.

T callinara may be eliminated by the markings. From the other 3, T nara is most
likely by its reported commonality. Can one do better than this?
