A real hero for forest preservation! Read this news today in PAUpdate: “High Court stays construction of tourist resorts and installation of windmills in Koyna WLS: The Bombay High Court recently issued an interim stay on the construction of tourist resorts and the installation of wind mills in the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary. The order was issued in response to a public interest litigation filed by the Satara based activist, Nana Khamlkar. The petition had alleged that authorities had permitted the installation of windmills in the sanctuary and a number of trees had been cut for the purpose. The Forest Range Officer (FRO), in his response, admitted that 500-550 trees had been felled in an area of about three hectares at Navaja inside the sanctuary and there were 215 windmills and 10 resorts in the sanctuary that had come up without the necessary permissions. Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Forest Department, Koynanagar, Taluka Patan, Satara – 415207, Maharashtra.” Do people from Satara and that general area know him? I hope that Milind Bhakare does. Milind, if you do, could you please convey my big thanks to Nana Khamlkar for haulting destruction of wildlife habitat at Koyna? Koyna has some of the best forest patches left in Maharashtra, and has an amazing butterfly diversity. I remember many fascinating butterflies from there: Dark Pierrot (Tarucus ananda), Indian Tawny Rajah (Charaxes psaphon imna), Paris Peacock (Papilio paris tamilana). I hope that we will have more people like Nana who will make a difference by actively pursuing critical conservation issues. Let us know if there is some way we can help such strong initiatives.
