Dear Shri Shyamji & Subramaniamji, The technical discussions has gone to a very thought reciprocating & informative direction. As I have understood that the butterfly was urinating in a very small fraction of second so catching it at that instant in continuous mode (4.5 FPS) would have been ideal if it was shoot at 1/4.5 seconds shutter speed. For in that case the next frame will start immediately after the first one, leaving no time gap between the frames (Pl correct me if my undestanding is not ok). The butterfly will have exposure for the whole time (provided the camera & butterfly have not shaken much for sharp image) but the urine will be exposed only the discharge duration. Higher shutter speed would have been useful with out the problem of synchronization if the camera could give higher FPS. The question is while the cameras can provide higher FPS in movie mode (~ 20 to 40 FPS) while in still mode the FPS is quite less, is it the problem only due to processing speed? Regards -C.Sengupta

If I have used 1/100, may be more shots got synchronised. For your clarification I am giving the mathematical calculation below: Speed Recording Time(Sec) 1/100 1/20 to1/25 1/200 1/40 to 1/50 1/1000 1/200 to 1/250 and so on I think you got the point Thank YouSubramanyam Kalluri Hyderabad Mobile: 09866685175 "WANDERING ONE GATHERS HONEY" My Picasa albums: http://picasaweb.google.com/subbukalluri From: SHYAM GHATE <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]>; kalluri subramanyam <[email protected]> Cc: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, 24 September 2011 2:17 PM Subject: Re: [ButterflyIndia] Common Jay secreting urine while puddling Hi Kalluri & Chittranjanjee, Since the query was made, I thought I will take the liberty to give some views. I am a learner of photography and open to corrections. Any inputs from others will help improve my skills at photographing butterflies. Your parameters : Camera Nikon D90 ; Aperture Priority ; Aperture f 14 ; Shutter speed 1/200; EV -0.3 It seems that the light was good at the time of photographing. Since you were positioned so square to a flat subject like the butterfly, I think you could have comfortably used an Aperture like f 7.1 or 8 as you do not need much depth of field. At your chosen ISO, that would have made the shutter 5 of 6 stops faster, so that you might have been able to get a shutter speed of 1/800 or 1/1000. The shutter speed could have been further increased by going up on ISO as I think 400 would be very safe ISO for cameral like D 90 (with max ISO of 3200?). Higher shutter speed would have improved chances of synchronisation - which was your main interest. Higher shutterspeeds obviously reduce shake as well. Enclosing two images in similar position as yours, both shot at f 7.1. As you can see there is no loss sharpness. The shutterspeeds have been 1/1000 and 1/2000 respectively. I routinely shoot at ISO 400 or little above as my camera max limit is 6400. cheers --- On Fri, 9/23/11, kalluri subramanyam <[email protected]> wrote: From: kalluri subramanyam <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [ButterflyIndia] Common Jay secreting urine while puddling To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Cc: "SHYAM GHATE" <[email protected]>, "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Date: Friday, September 23, 2011, 5:23 PM Aperture PriorityISO -- 200 Subramanyam Kalluri From: SHYAM GHATE <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Cc: Chittaranjan Sengupta <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, 22 September 2011 7:38 PM Subject: Re: [ButterflyIndia] Common Jay secreting urine while puddling Hi Kalluri, Can you please also add (i) in which mode (Shutter priority / Aperture Priority / etc) the pictures were shot, (ii) what was the ISO used? cheers --- On Tue, 9/20/11, kalluri subramanyam <[email protected]> wrote: From: kalluri subramanyam <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [ButterflyIndia] Common Jay secreting urine while puddling To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Cc: "Chittaranjan Sengupta" <[email protected]> Date: Tuesday, September 20, 2011, 1:55 PM Dear Chittaranjan, Here actually it is nothing to do with shutter speed or aperture, select to suit the lighting conditions. The problem comes with synchronising the act, visually almost impossible except for luck(in Jayanthi river I got Chain Swordtail with one out of two shots which I recognised while editing - file attached). This time, I used high speed continuous mode and I din't stop until 20 frames, then checked & all are good shots but only two are synchronised . One advantage with this act is normally it will not get disturbed quickly and will give sufficient time to think.
