Dear All, Just got a call from DFO Ulaganathan about the problem of elephants that are migrating towards Kolar and Malur RFs crossing the NH7. He informed me that 55 elephants have got together in Sanamavu RF and are staging to cross the highway to move towards Settipalli RF and Chittoor etc. For the last few days the forest department has been frazzled trying to handle the people who are bursting crackers randomly and confusing the herd. The people think that the FD is driving the elephants toward the highway from Udedurgam RF, whereas the animals are just reviving old migration routes. The department is trying to anticipate the herd movement in order to control traffic to enable them to cross over. The department is trying to provide safe passage to the animals on their migration route. He has requested volunteers to who can help in spotting the movement of the herd and convey the information through wireless and mobile. Volunteers will be briefed by the department. FD is camped at the biodiesel plant in Sanamavu. The work involved takes place at night and can go on till early hours of the morning. The DFO, Conservator, Asst Conservator and entire staff of the Hosur Division is involved at present. Staff from Dharmapuri division are being mobilised tonight, and staff may also be called upon from Harur division. It seems a lot of elephants have moved into the division and this problem may persist for a few more weeks. You can volunteer for according to your convenience even for one night on a weekday or a weekend. Needless to say it is a tough, potentially dangerous task. If you would like to volunteer, please email me at [email protected] along with your mobile number. Warm regards Sanjeev -- Sanjeev Kumar S.R -- Nature is GOD! Conservation is Prayer!
