What does "need" have to do with it? Doesn't MFJ own three antenna manufacturing companies all with basically the same product selection?

The Japanese companies have dominated the transceiver market for decades, in terms of overall volume, and the Chinese companies are developing a following, but there still seems to be plenty of room for smaller volume manufacturers, and some people are willing to pay extra for one of those rigs. Without having any access to their financials, Elecraft seems to be doing okay, as a counterexample, and so does FlexRadio.

Speculating is fun, but speculation is all this is. Neither RF Concepts nor Ten-Tec has to convince either you or I that it's a good thing to do. They just have to convince their stockholders.

MFJ doesn't need either of them. They already own Ameritron. They wisely decided to stay out of the transceiver business so far. That's the most research intensive segment of the ham market. They don't have to compete with the Japanese and Chinese manufacturers.

Maybe they're just trying to form a company that's too expensive for MFJ to buy.

I don't get the logic behind this merger. Two weak companies make
one larger weak company. They serve different markets. So where
is the synergy in their merger? Cost savings? Not likely. Product
    line? Nope. GO figure
