Happy 4th of July Gayle! Welcome to our ham radio community! Your choice of repeaters depends what part of our area you are in and to an extent what you care to do with your license .
For ham fun the 146.940 (167.9) BVARC is one of the areas largest communities. You can often find diverse discussions almost any time do day, but look for the most traffic at drive times Monday thru Friday. The repeater has recently been upgraded and can hear a very wide area around Houston. (It's a bit weak on the NE side). Our club meeting is next Thursday and you are more than welcome to join us. Contact me or any club member for details. Or check the web. For emergency communications work. There are several area repeaters used for certain areas of operation. For a central location located in the Harris County emergency operations center try N5TRS for some nets. It's located near I-10 and 610 just north of the Galleria area. Try N5TRS on 145.370 (123.0). Also look up district 14 ARES on the web if you are in Harris County. For Fort Bend county there are some other resources available but I am an clear lake and am not as well versed in the area as some BVARC members. BVARC is a great resource for some local ham radio help and I am sure you will get more assistance soon! For now see you on the air.
