I have a 12 inch long 1/2” diameter piece of copper pipe I use as a ground bus. 
 

My radio, amplifier, tuner, and power supply all tied to to using #18 wire 
(speaker wire would do the job.)

each wire is connected to the bus by a pipe clam or a screw and washer

Then I have a short section of ground strap running from the bus to a copper 
clad ground rod just outside my shack.

 

Also, I notice poor signals or RF feedback into my shack when a ground wire 
comes loose.

 

Grounding does provide some protection from lightning strikes, but I know 
several hams that install a ground PLUS lightning arrestors or just disconnect 
their antennas from the radios when not in use.

 

I do recommend you install a ground bus of some sort and tie everything to it.
