Hi Gayle,

With the sun spot #'s declining and the A index # too high even my 10 Meter
V-Quad has not much joy for Dx and for that matter NA states and Canada
provinces are few and at best in and out. Ross says upgrade to general/extra
and he is right. 20 M is a slam dunk for a contact every day. 40M will bring
much joy for ragchew contacts early day and evening with some suprize DX too.
Time to upgrade your licence to the potential of your multi band vertical
antenna. You will find it to be the BEST upgrage you can make to your station.

Transceiver class has little to do with overcoming propagation conditions. We
are headed for a down turn is propagation and over the next 5 or 6 years not
only will we see loss of 10 meters as a DX band, but also 15 and 20 meters and
some timed 40 band, as well. You will find occasional summer months (e-layer)
openings, but almost no f-layer (DX) skip. Read section in ARRL Handbook on
propagation.

My suggestion is to upgrade to General or Extra Class so that you can use the
lower bands during this down turn in propagation. CB operators found this out
over down turns in Sun spot activity. I have been through ups and downs in Sun
cycles from 1958 through today as a ham radio operator and can speak with some
wisdom. I have witnessed the great improvements in equipment, advent of new
digital modes, and operational skills, but all of this development and
improvement can not overcome the sun`s 11 year cycle.

Best of luck and enjoy ham radio as we make it through these propagation
cycles together.

This may be a case of a loosing battle due to propagation being bigger than
me or anything I can try to do. Concerning 10 meters. I can control 3
variables toward propagation fighting...antenna height...amount of antenna
metal in the air...tranceiver catagories (classes) ie entry/mid/top levels.
I've addressed antenna height and mass...question is raising tranceivers
class....does it also, even if just a little, also raise dx sensitivity or is
it only bells and whistles?

  Thank you.
