Bill Stone and I spent a Sunday last year checking out all the alternatives. I
did not document it well because I did not intend to be involved this year, but
the messages this year remind me of what I did not remember. I have also
contacted the American Undersea Warfare Board of Directors and asked if they
would allow us in the compound for the event. They considered it in a board
meeting and decided that they would not support the Amateur Radio Community in
any way for MSWE. The Coast Guard will not support us using their turf because
of restrictions from Homeland Security after 9-11-2001. The Yacht Basin will
not support us because they do not have facilities that allow this to be a
proper place for the event. Last year we were welcomed by the Galveston County
Park Board and their employees and everyone except the Ft. Travis wildlife
cooperated fully after we determined that they were worried mostly about the
Paranormal Club that was sharing the park. We had no trouble with the
paranormal club but the mosquitos were fierce. We left the skunk alone and she
did not bother us other than a bit of a scare. The birds were a bit of a poop,
but we dodged that. The showers were nice, even without hot water and the
facilities were welcome. I don't know the status of the Cabanas this year, but
I plan a trip this week end to check them out. Last year we did not have
electricity, but we made do. The building was being renovated last year, so
may be better this year. I think the mosquitos can be kept at bay with a bit
of screening, some tents and Yard Foggers with better planning. The more help
that I can find, the better it will be. So, get your suggestions in quickly so
that I can act on them. Volunteer for what you are willing to help with. If
you are involved with the hamfest, let it be known and we will wait for your
availability. If you want to do dual duty with Field Day, great. Let me know
your plan and I will try to work with it.
I am starting early enough to have flexibility. I still need a co-chairman,
but demands on your time will be minimal for a while, so do not worry about
interference from the ham-fest if you are involved there. Let me know what you
would like to see. Last year was a bit rushed, so there are some things that
could go better and we will try to do better this year. Willis 'Cookie'
