Subject: [BVARC] Help! I need your support!
All,
I’m looking forward to meeting more of BVARC at this weekend’s hamfest. Keeping
fingers crossed for good weather.
Some of you know that I’ve been attempting to get a permit from the City of
Pearland to put up a tower in my back yard. I’ve run into issues that make it
nearly impossible.
Pearland adopted a Unified Development Code in 2006. It specifies that amateur
radio antenna towers are allowed as long as they are “less than fifty (50’)
feet in height”.
Brazoria County code requires that structures be rated for 110mph Basic Wind
Speed. Not unreasonable given our proximity to hurricanes.
There are only 2 manufacturers of self-supporting towers that meet the Basic
Wind Speed requirement: Heights Towers and A/N wireless. Their products come in
10’ sections. So, this means that a tower can be built in 10’ increments.
In communication with the building permits folks, a 50’ tower would not be
allowed because the UDC specifies “less than”.
So, in order to comply with all of the codes, only a 40’ tower can be erected.
That gives only about 3-5’ clearance from the top of my house and a Yagi would
rake the roofline in a wind.
I'll come to a council meeting, even though I am not a Pearland resident.
Have you talked to John Stratton, N5AUS?
This is largely a political issue. I’ve tried to get a Conditional Use Permit
for a 70’ tower, that failed, then I tried for a 50’ tower and that failed.
Back in NC, I was an OES with ARES. I like DX and emergency comms.
PRB-1 is just fine as long as you have the dollars to fight in court. I don’t
have many dollars left right now.
I’m new to the area < 2 years. I’ve not yet participated with ARES, but am
eager to join in. But I need your help.
I’m sure that some of you have participated in Ecomms here in TX. Can we get a
list of the served agencies and contact people so that they can get on the side
of this? Would some of you come to a City Council meeting to give a show of
support?
At the meeting I attended, I overheard one of the council members asking “Why
is ham radio still around. If I want to contact somebody on the other side of
the world, I have the Internet.”

Bill, N4HPG
