Fellow CWops Member –

We are pleased to report that the state of our club is excellent. We continue
to grow, and our initiatives have taken our club to new levels of achievement.
You are part of this vibrant, active group of CW operators, and we appreciate
your membership.

There are 3 items we need to mention. Please be kind enough to read this
message carefully.

1. We have over 300 students graduating annually from our CW Academy.
For those of us regularly active in CWT sessions, we see an increase in
participation in part from these new CW enthusiasts. We need to do more, and
we need your help. Please go to our club website and read about the CW
Academy. We need more advisors (teachers) who can spend two hours a week,
during an eight-week semester, helping grow our CW community. If you’ve ever
taught, you know how satisfying it is. Just reading these words doesn’t
transport you to the sense of accomplishment and pride you’ll feel, however.
You really have to do it once. Please take a look on the www.cwops.org
<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?CWops/f7128b54a4/52840b99c6/86c9327f6e> website, read
about CWA and follow up.

If your schedule doesn't allow you to fully commit to being a CWA advisor, then
please consider our recently launched CWA HF program where you can sign up for
a time slot in the evenings during the week to get on 7.035 MHz or nearby and
work stations that go there for CW practice. You call CQ CWA HF, or call CQ
and sign with your call and "CWA" at the end, and respond to students seeking
practice. There is a UTC calendar on the CWops website with further
information on how to sign up for a CWA HF slot. These QSOs can even count for
QTX, discussed below. Finally, for those who are already CWA advisors, we have
now the Star Students program that allows advisors to elevate students to
Associate Advisor status. The Associate Advisors can assist the advisors by
giving one-on-one help to struggling students, gaining even more experience
themselves and preparing to become fully qualified CWops members and advisors.
The CW Academy is quite something and we hope you’ll consider being part of it.

2. Most of us spend less time on the air than we might prefer, but there
are two CWops activity initiatives that can help focus your limited
availability. First, there’s the weekly CWT QSO parties. These are not really
contests because there is no winner as such (though scores are posted on a
website). The fun is to make contacts in fairly rapid fashion with fellow
members and others. It’s great CW practice, too. CWT occurs every Wednesday at
13z, 19z, and 03z (Thursday) on the usual bands. No matter where you are, at
least one of the sessions should give you skip sufficient to make lots of
contacts. The second activity is QTX. An award is given for participating in
20-minute or longer QSOs. See our website for details. For those interested
in our more staged and publicized annual QSO party, look for the CW Open (CWO)
on-air activity scheduled for September 5. Mark it on your calendar, review
the rules on our website, and plan on participating! If you’re a CW operator,
you’ll want to do CWT, QTX or CWO!

3. We know that there are lots of great CW operators out there who have
not yet gotten the word about the panache of being a CWops member!! Whether
you work a non-member in a CWT or while ragchewing, why not nominate the
operator for CWops membership? Ah, you don’t know how to nominate somebody!
Here’s how: First, ask the operator (on the air or by email using QRZ.COM) if
s/he would like to be a CWops member, noting the CW Academy, the on-air
activities, the camaraderie, etc. (Better yet, tell him or her why you’re a
member!) If the operator says “yes,” go to our website, www.cwops.org
<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?CWops/f7128b54a4/52840b99c6/72e7c750de> , click on
“members only” and use “telegrapher” for the login and “morse8” for the
password. Then fill out the form. It’s quick and simple. If you are the
first to nominate him or her, use the nomination form. Otherwise, use the
sponsorship form.

Please don’t forget to keep up on your fellow members and club news by reading
the club Newsletter, edited by N6XI every month. Go to our website and click
on “newsletter” on the left side.

Your Board Members and Officers
