Jeffrey, the cost of a decent KW station without antenna system has remained at 
about $5,000 current dollars from 1956 until current.  That means that you 
could purchase about the same technology for $5,000, but this is while a good 
paying job paid $5,000 in 1956 and between $50K and $100K with the KW station 
still at about $5K.  No One had the current technology at any price and current 
day contest stations did not exist in those days.  Transceivers did not exist 
and SSB was just being invented.  Digital was not conceived at the time.  RTTY 
did exist, but with mechanical devices to send and recdive.  Transistors were 
just coming on the market at about ten hours pay for a single transistor with 
audio capability.  Enjoy cheap radio today!
