Reverse Beacons are becoming one of the most important real time tools for
monitoring propagation conditions around the world. Basically, a Reverse
Beacon is a receiver that detects a station calling CQ and measures its
strength. It then broadcasts this information to web sites, which collect
this data and make it available to everyone. To learn how this technology is
being used today by hams and scientists, please go to their web site
http://reversebeacon.com . A lot of us use this information in programs like
DXMAPS.

The reverse beacon people just published some really interesting data on
propagation during the 2015 CQWWDX CW contest. The Reverse Beacons around
the world listened to stations calling CQ during the contest and reported
their strengths at the respective locations. What is really phenomenal about
this is that thousands of transmitting stations and reverse beacons were
activated simultaneously around the world for 48 hours. This kind of data
would not have been possible without the Hams.
