Then, I guess I should ask if there is anyone that would loan me an antenna 
analyzer then. Anyone have one to lend to this poor old "leaping gnome"?

Actually, borrowing an antenna analyzer would serve you better. 
You'd not need a radio to spit out RF. 
You'd also be able to see the range of SWR from 1:1 to say, 5:1 across the 
frequencies you'd intend to transmit on. 
It'd be much easier to trim the dipole as well, if needed.
