The timing of this announcement is interesting and possibly fortuitous for
me, because I was about to post a listing on a regional trading net asking
for volunteers to help repair the mast that supports my Alpha Delta LB.
Harvey snapped one of the upper level Dacron guys that held the mast near
vertical. Now it bends over enough to render the AD untunable.

On the surface, it would appear that I just need that guy line replaced. I
do, but when is anything ever so straightforward? The mast is technically a
35' fiberglass telescoping model with the top section retracted to add
rigidity to the next section. The main complication is that the sections
were secured in place with screws rather than relying on just the supplied
friction locks. This means the mast doesn't telescope, and I suspect it
wouldn't even with the screws removed because of debris left on the interior
walls from drilling the holes. Nope, this mast has to be lifted out of its
hole in the ground and laid over the fence into the neighbor's backyard for
repairs. One man can lift the mast if two or three others help by using the
remaining guy lines to stabilize and control it.

Michael Wrenn erected the mast with the help of a couple other hams.
Unfortunately, those others are no longer available, and Michael has chosen
to isolate himself from BVARC for various reasons. He'll still lead the
actual repair work, be it fell to me to find helpers. That's no small feat
given my own uneasy relationship with the club. Anyway, volunteers need to
understand the logistics of lowering and raising that unwieldy mast makes
for a full day, especially when some serious tree trimming will likely be
necessary too. I'll provide the barbecue, but the beer should probably stay
on ice until the "air" work is done.

Subject: [BVARC] Impacted by HARVEY?
Importance: High

Your BVARC board is concerned about the membership and the impact that
Hurricane Harvey had initially on each and every member.

We are wishing to contact each member as well as other hams in the area to
not only voice this concern, but compile a list of those who continue to be
effected through the loss of property in the form of transportation or your
home and property.

I will be making a list of your needs, either immediate or long term so that
we can contact you and assist you in whatever way we can.
