If you read my comment below, you will see why I quit after 28 hours of
operation. I thought I was going to keep Dave company for the full 36 hours,
but, I had to quit after 28 hours of operation.

I had a lot of fun. Dave,K5GN, gave me detailed list of things to do under
the present low in radio conditions. Unfortunately, there was an S7 noise
level on 40 and 80 meters at night time. Probably the nearby farmer with a
malfunctioning lamp. So, I had to adjust my strategy and spend more time on
20 meters. The other issue was that the rotor froze in the NNE position. I
have never worked so many Russians in my life. I guess I must have had a
booming signal with my beam and 1.5KW (legal).

I worked several of he people I have been practicing with on he weekly nets,
even though it was for less than 15 seconds. It was also interesting to see
in the early scores that 8 out of the top ten scores were using SO2R. I was
one of two that did not. So, I guess the next thing is to learn SO2R
operation from Dave.

I ran about 90% of the time and ended up with my personal best scores. There
were times when I had good runs going and needed to empty my bladder after 3
cups of coffee. And, it made me remember asking Dave about how he can sit
there for hours and not take breaks. Now I know the answer.

Till next time, Nizar K0NM

Comments:

I thought I was going to keep Dave, K5GN, company from the Club, but, I
could not sit any longer after 28 hours of operation. Conditions were not
the best form me on 40 and 80 meters. Too much noise and static crashes. The
money band was 20 meters and it was crowded like the subway in Tokyo at rush
hour.

I set my goal at 1000 QSO's and decided I was going to run 90% of time. By
midday Saturday, I had reached the 1000 QSOs and the score was around
700,000.

So, I set my new goal of 1,000,000 score. It did not take long since the
score increases rapidly with higher number of QSOs. So, after the 1,000,000
points, the new level was 2,000,000. By that time, my butt refused to
cooperate. Also, the QSO rate went down forcing me to S+P. So, I gave in and
quit after 28 hours of operation.

It was fun. It was good to connect with people from all over the world. My
only suggestion for this contest should be that it should have a handicap
system like in golf. This way, us 75 years old dudes can compete with the
younger guys who are faster, better and have great stamina.
