As a member of ARRL you have access to digital versions of ALL their magazines.

I find OTA (on the air) magazine to be a wonderful resource. It is designed
for newcomers, but the information is useful for all of us. There is normally
an easy hands-on project in each issue.

ARRL Field Day is June 26-27. Bob Glorioso, W1IS, and Bob Rose, KC1DSQ,
describe how they made an inexpensive, easy-to-build portable antenna for the
event. Their goal was to have an antenna that they could fit in a minivan.

You can buy many of the materials for this antenna from a hardware store. That
includes the spreaders, which are two 10-foot-long wooden dowels, and #14 THHN
wire. The result was an antenna you can take into the field with you, that has
good gain and a good front-to-back ratio on the upper half of the 40-meter
band.

Predicting how solar activity and atmospheric conditions will influence radio
propagation can be a challenge, but there are easy-to-use online tools that can
help all hams. This article introduces two of them – the Solar-Terrestrial Data
widget created by Paul Herrman, NØNBH, which uses scientific data to present a
snapshot prediction of conditions on several frequencies, and William Hepburn’s
Tropospheric Ducting Forecast tool, which forecasts propagation on VHF and UHF.

Next-Gen Contesters
Neil Rapp, WB9VPG

Three ham radio clubs in Indiana used ARRL Field Day in 2019 to hook youth and
other newcomers on amateur radio. Guest writer Joe Fitter, K7JOE, faculty
sponsor of the amateur radio club at Indiana University, describes how that
club, along with the Bloomington High School South Amateur Radio Club and the
Southern Indiana Amateur Radio Association, teamed up for the event. They are
hoping that other groups will take a similar approach to Field Day.

Their Field Day event showcased modern technologies like SDR and AREDN/mesh,
but also showed people how they can build radio equipment. The “Ugly
Antenna/Cheap Charlie Antenna Contest” demonstrated that amateur radio
equipment can be inexpensive and still work well. The team made 800 contacts
with an antenna that cost $10 to make.

<https://blubrry.com/eclectictech/> Eclectic Tech – Episode 32 – April 21
Learn about how a railroad company created the “trainphone” during the 1940s so
its crews could communicate with train stations. Because of its short range and
other issues, conventional radio technology at the time was not practical for
railroads. The solution was putting rails on the roof of the train to act as an
antenna and send messages through the telephone wires that ran along the
tracks.
