To our new hams out there. This weekend, I worked an event and had people
come to me asking about what I was doing. I explained the reason and what I
was doing. A lot of them got excited when I mentioned the different fields
that are involved in ham. As a matter of fact, I even gave a few of them
the ARRL test site to find one and pamphlets to get involved. Some even
want to get involved just to be more involved in Emergency Communications
during incidents. But the one issue I kept hearing was, "But I am clueless
and do not know a lot about radios." or "I am not very good with Tech."
Please keep in mind, as your adventures in ham get started, explore
different areas. Also, explore new ones. We in BVARC have a lot of mentors
and members willing to explore with you. A lot of members are not tech, but
do know how to push and button and talk.
Also, as I have decided this year to leave the comfort of the small areas I
have experience in and try new. I am a technologist by day, but I am not a
backwoods kind of radio guy.
During this time, I have learned that ALL ham radio has 3 steps.
1. Try - try it and see what happens, you might get a surprise
2. Fail - you will have failures (or what seems to be failures), but the
problem solving is what makes it even more of a success in the end
3. Succeed - this step might take1,2,3.. or 8 failures to get to, but
after you succeed what you are trying to do, you will have the excitement
and pride that you did it.
The opportunities are almost endless in Ham and the rewards are equally
endless. Go out and take the next step and the step after. Do not be afraid
to mess up or feel that you are going to embarrass yourself. We have all
been there, and anyone that tells you that they have not experienced it is
full of it. We all have our moments of frustration and triumphs.
I will be the first, I have asked questions that a seasoned ham would ask
if someone tied my shoes in the morning. We all have our moments and all
have worked our way up, you can too.
Please, if you want to see what we can do, June 28th and 29th, we will be
doing Field Day, please come out and even just visit and ask questions. I
know personally, there are going to be some VERY knowledgeable members of
different clubs out and with us. They all are VERY good at what they do and
are not afraid to talk.
