Hi,
Many of you have heard last year that I became an adjunct advisor for the new
Houston Christian University radio club. (HARC, N5HCU).
Last semester was the start with 5 students. 3 graduated (N5BAA being the spark
plug, thanks Blake).
We are now starting over again with a new batch of about a dozen interested
young radio Jedi.
As a volunteer advisor, I am charged with basic teaching about radio, and
finding ways to get the young generation involved.
Today I came up with the idea that we might just be able to make contact with
the space station on a fly over. At least they will be able to hear it most
likely.
To that end, Im looking for a Houston area HAM who might have the proper
antenna system for contact. We’ll use my Kenwood TMV71 50W Dual Band and an
amplifier if I can get one on loan. Or we can take loan of your radio/antenna
in the small window of the flyovers.
If anyone would like to come alongside the effort, let me know. Don't reply
all please.
There is one caveat. These students know NOTHING about radio. Almost all of
them have never touched a microphone. Their life is an iPhone. They don't
understand any of our HAM lingo. We have to start with basics.
I’ll be introducing Echolink to them as well, but this space station gig is a
fun one if they can make contact. We did a fox hunt last semester with 2M tape
measure antennas they built.
We will be meeting every Tuesday on campus at HCU from 12:30-1:30 pm so I’ll be
glad to host a mentor for this challenge if you would like to come alongside.
If anyone would like to make a donation to the HARC student radio club, here is
the link. It is tax deductible.
They have a bank account set up for designated monies. Just put in the comments
that the donation is for the HARC radio club.
