Byron,
Good morning.  I have heard CW students comment favourably on a device called the morserino.  I don’t use one since I have my IC 7300 to accomplish the task.

As far as a key, I started with a $25 MFJ straight key 3 years ago.  If the instructors require a paddle, I’d suggest a puttikeeg handheld paddle.  It’s portable, works fine, and you can take it out on POTA activations. See Amazon link below.

Hello BVARC,

I’m signed up for the CW Academy Beginner Class which starts January 5th.  I’m a bit apprehensive about this, but I’m going to “give it the old college try”.

They tell me I need:

4) A paddle key (preferably not a Straight Key or Bug)

5) A keyer or radio with a built-in keyer, that produces sufficient side-tone volume that can be picked up by the webcam mic

I’m hoping that someone in the club might have a paddle and keyer that they would be willing to part with or loan me for a couple of months.  I don’t currently have an HF radio, so I guess I need a keyer and a paddle.  I’ve been told that Bencher is the most popular and MFJ has one that “looks just like it”.

Thanks,

Byron
