WxC is the special event call sign being used in all 10 call districts.. I
don't recall whether they got anything for Puerto Rico or any of the
possessions.. if they did, it should be up on their website that Lee posted the
link.. Houston and Dallas are using W5C with a /H or /D to denote Houston or
Dallas respectively.
The Wimberley Club, north of Waco, set this up. The person behind it, AA5HK, is
an old high school friend of mine, who I got into ham radio and then talked him
into changing from pre-med to electrical engineering in college. He contacted
me when he first came up with the idea of wanting to know more about the
special event call signs and I steered him to the correct information and gave
him Lee's email to contact for the Houston operation.
I also signed up to operate under the /D for Dallas but Field Day rules
prohibit more than one call sign being used at a field day location unless it's
a "get on the air VHF station" for class 2A and above. I'll only be a single
operator so I had to choose which one. Maybe for the 4th of July, I might use
the W5C/D call on the air.
Max at ARRL HQ in the contest dept. returned my call just a little while ago
and confirmed that a club cannot operate from its clubhouse as a Class A, no
matter what the situation is. It must be portable in the field to be a Class A.
So if you work W5SSV and they report a class 2 or 3A, it won't count. Oh well..
I tried to tell them but they wouldn't listen.
Now back to my SUV air conditioning work ☺️
