The origin of the slang word ham for amateur radio operators has no definite
start.
The most accepted version is from landline morse code operators calling a
newbie "ham fisted" ...the seasoned ops could tell a new op on the line by the
way they sent messages.. So it carried over the radio where new CW ops were
called ham fisted or just hams by those already operating for years...and it
stuck to the entire service.
YMMV
