If it doesn't want to restart the xserver (or gives an error and says
it's already running) test by rebooting, and see if that works.  It may
also be worth double-checking what graphics driver is loaded (that's the
first screen in 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86'), you can find what's
installed in the machine by checking the output of 'lspci'.
