Yes, FreeBSD is great on many level.

Sort of. Before we had the BWorks wiki, we used the cwelug wiki:

http://www.cwelug.org/cgi-bin/wiki.cgi?BWorks/Ubuntu

Current Ubuntu installs are similar to what's on that page, sans
windowing system. What's different is that after the server is
installed the swap partition is replaced with a swapfile, the filesystem
is named, and the fstab and grub menu are updated to use the named
filesystem. After that the ubuntu user is changed to the normal
username/password combo. This is the base for all the Ubuntu variations
we have in the shop: mini-server, shopserver, classroom, and retail machine.

The mini-server uses that server install to then these services are added:
- ssh-server
- apache
- ntp
- dhcp
- squid
- ddclient

and we add a few users.

Sort of. I've got a clone image and the config files are (or were) on
the wiki. Would be great if more than just myself would know how build
the mini-server. That way we could crank one out and replace it quickly
if the current one dies. But even if it died, we could survive by
turning on the DHCP server on the router until we get a chance to build
a new mini-server. So, having the mini-server go down or get hacked is
more of an inconvenience than a crisis. ByteWorks got along fine
without it for years.

So, two questions for you:

- would you be interested in going through an Ubuntu install with me for
the mini-server and writing up the docs on our wiki? We'll probably go
through it a few times to verify the docs match what we did.

- would you be interested in training at lest two other volunteers?

Regards,
- Robert
