I would not even bother. After I run off another dozen clones, we will no longer need the Debian image. > > We're making just enough for the one > > last class, plus a few spares -- remember, we are switching to Ubuntu > > for the next session starting in January 2009. > > Nice. That's why the push to get this batch of grad machines done ASAP. We have a very nice stack of "zombie" machines, most all are identical, and all have been properly tested so the hardware is all good. It should take very little time to install clone drives (will need to reconfigure the xserver, as they all have the onboard Intel i810 graphics chips, which have no dedicated memory of their own so need some specified) -- hopefully this Saturday or at the latest the one after, the machines will be "grad ready". That will free up the shop staff to focus on the Ubuntu migration. I don't think there has been any final decision on how we'll get Ubuntu on the drives. Bill has been testing a method of doing net installs, so maybe he'll give us an update on how that is going. We will have November and December to test out the method(s) we choose, and to make sure there will be no unpleasant surprises. Just one "ferexample" -- I know that running 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' under Ubuntu allows you to modify your mouse and keyboard, but it does *not* include the part about determining what your graphics chipset is. So, will a "generic" cloned Ubuntu drive give us fits if the original machine we took the image from has an AGP nVidia card and the machine we are putting a cloned drive into has an onboard i810? Maybe we should plan for a meeting of the shop folks who are involved in this for Saturday November 1 to come up with our plan of attack. Comments? Theresa
