If it is helpful for further tweaking your default OS, here a general
guidelines that I use when setting up a new instance of Ubuntu at
CAMP...

After default installation...

1. Remove trackerd. This package has some severe bus and/or design
flaws that could render older machines with limited disk bandwidth
outright unusable.

2. Add medibuntu repository to get acroread and other common 3rd-party debs.

3. install these packages for Acrobat, common media codes, and Windows
True Type fonts.
acroread
w32codecs
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3
gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mpegdemux
msttcorefonts

4. Install Flashblock and AdBlock plus plugins on Firefox.
