The new API is now available. I'll probably try and get us moved over to
it this weekend.
I'm happy to see that the data is now available as well. It would
likely speed up page load times a bit, if we query it locally rather
than repeatedly making RESET calls for the same data.

Two years ago Sunlight Labs introduced an API aimed at helping
people get their political mashups off the ground. The Sunlight
Labs API has served nearly a million requests, but it has not
been maintained in the way that many would have hoped. That is
why today we are announcing a brand new Sunlight Labs API, it is
much leaner yet preserves most of the original functionality,
and introduces some nice new functionality that was not present
in the previous API.

The new API is available now at
http://services.sunlightlabs.com/api/

If you have been using the old API don't worry, the old API will
stay around for a while, and if you haven't been using the old
API or haven't looked at it in a while, now is the time to give
our API another look.

The new API is much simpler to use and contains most of the
functionality of the old API boiled down into 5 more powerful
methods. The new API is also built on a new backend that offers
much more frequently updated data. In addition there are now
regular dumps of all of the legislator information offered in
the API, so if you were mainly using the API as a source of all
current legislators it is possible to obtain this without
writing any code.

For details on transitioning from the old API to the new API see
http://services.sunlightlabs.com/api/docs/transition_guide/

We are going to be updating the new API more regularly and have
several additional features planned that should be available
soon. In addition, we are hoping to foster more of a community
around the Sunlight Labs API, so instead of using this list to
communicate infrequently, we have created a mailing list that
anyone can sign up for.
