I've never had it actually notify me on Ubuntu when someone else commited in the repository. I think it's done that notification on Windows properly from what I remember.
It also leaves behind a stale window after commiting, pretty often. I don't see why should it be removed unless nobody will be fixing it - the concept still has a use.
