The case in point is with UW IMAP v2004 and MBX folders. Repeated deletions and expunges successfully remove large messages, but the physical folder remained [essentially] unchanged in size. This seems to happen sometimes, but not always.
I see that nobody answered this while I was on vacation.
Expunged messages can only be removed from the mailbox when an expunge or checkpoint happens while only one session has the mailbox open. Shared expunge just marks the message as invisible; exclusive access is needed to do the message removal (I call it "burping").
