This issue comes up periodically. See, for example, the archived message at http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=xerces-c-dev&m=109095797511952&w=2. Assuming you've worked out how to create a document (the CreateDOMDocument sample will help if you haven't), the key method is DOMImplementation::createDocumentType().

Can someone show how to create an xml document using the DOM classes, that specifies that it's DTD is for example the DTD 'items' in 'item.dtd'? I understand how to read in documents while validating from a DTD, and that write validation is not possible, but I don't know how to do this!
