What if you make this initial buffer a static buffer? And allocate

That keeps the memory cost constant, at the expense of a guaranteed
extra string copy.
I understand. Shall we protect the static buffer against concurrent
threads, e.g. shall transcode be reentrant?
Hey Axel,
My choice of the work "static" was poor. I meant to allocate a fixed
size buffer on the stack...in which case there's no need to protect
anything, as each caller gets its own buffer.
James.
